For this tag, I wanted to create something with a strong vintage feel while keeping the design clean and focused on a single focal point. The paper doll immediately became the star of the composition, so everything else was built around him using texture, layering, and a limited color palette.
The background started with a heavily textured surface created through a stencil and texture paste. Once dry, I applied layers of Distress products to build depth and variation. The combination of deep blue tones and dark neutrals creates a masculine look while still allowing the details to remain visible.
To bring out the texture, I highlighted the raised areas with metallic accents. The gold catches the light beautifully and adds contrast against the cooler blue background. Rather than covering the entire surface, I focused the metallic highlights only on selected areas of the stencil pattern. This helps define the texture without overwhelming the design.
The paper doll was chosen because it fits perfectly with the vintage style of the project. I added small touches of gold to his clothing to visually connect him with the background and make him feel like part of the overall composition rather than a separate element placed on top.
For the sentiment, I stamped and layered it onto a separate panel before mounting it across the figure. This creates another layer of dimension while reinforcing the message of the piece. The blue tones of the sentiment tie directly into the background, helping everything feel cohesive.
One of my favorite details is the subtle stitching around the edges of the tag. It creates a finished look while adding another layer of texture without introducing additional bulk.
The final result combines several of my favorite mixed media elements: texture paste, layered Distress colors, metallic highlights, stitching, and vintage imagery. By limiting the color palette and allowing the textures to do most of the work, the project feels detailed and dimensional while still remaining balanced and easy on the eye.
Sometimes a strong focal image, a few carefully chosen colors, and plenty of texture are all you need to create a project with impact.

And that’s all for today, If you have any questions, suggestions or if you want to let me know what you think of this project, leave a message!
