This mixed media tag was all about fun with foil, and I wanted to really let texture, shine, and softness play together in a way that feels romantic and a little nostalgic.
I started with a simple tag base and built my background using Distress Ink and Distress Spray Stain, layering soft pinks and warm tones to create movement without overpowering the focal elements. I love how these mediums blend into one another so effortlessly, especially when you let the water do part of the work. The subtle variations in color already add depth before any embellishing even begins.
The real stars of this piece are the embossed hearts covered with foil. Applying foil over the raised embossed design is pure magic: the foil catches only the high points, creating that gorgeous, imperfect shine that feels both elegant and playful. Each heart reflects the light differently, which makes the surface incredibly dynamic as you move the tag around.
To enhance that luminous effect even more, I added a touch of Distress Spritz, bringing in delicate sparkle without overwhelming the composition. It’s one of those details you don’t fully appreciate until the light hits just right, and then it completely comes alive.
For embellishments, I reached for my beloved Idea-ology pieces to add a sense of story and time. The small details, combined with the vintage photo, help anchor the tag emotionally. The leaves, cut from a Sizzix Thinlits die by Tim Holtz, soften the layout and bring a gentle organic flow that balances the structured tag shape.
This project was a reminder of how joyful it is to experiment, letting foil, ink, texture, and sparkle interact freely.
Mixed media is at its best when you allow yourself to play, and this tag is a celebration of exactly that. 💛
