For this Halloween mixed media tag with stencils, I combined crackle paste, modeling paste and Distress Oxide Sprays to create a worn, slightly creepy background for these two little visitors. They look perfectly innocent. Obviously.
I started with a thin layer of paint before applying Crackle Paste through the first stencil to create the brick texture. The cracks and irregular surface give the background that old, crumbling-wall appearance.
For the second stencil, I switched to bats and Modeling Paste, introducing another layer of raised texture without losing the details underneath.
Once the texture was ready, I used Distress Oxide Sprays to add color. The combination of rusty orange, muted blue and dark areas brings out the different surfaces and creates a suitably gloomy Halloween atmosphere.
The interesting part of using two stencils is how the different patterns interact. The bricks establish the background, while the bats introduce movement and connect the texture to the Halloween theme.
For the focal point, I used a Tim Holtz Paper Doll, adding a mask and a witch hat from the sticker collection. Apparently, these two have decided to go trick-or-treating, although I’m not entirely convinced they’re here for the candy.
The black-and-white figures stand out against the colorful, textured background, while the dark bats help tie everything together.
To finish the tag, I used Tim Holtz sentiment stamps with their coordinating Simon Says Stamp dies. The two separate strips, Vanishing Visitors and A Wicked Thing, sit at the top of the composition, with a few loose fibers adding another bit of texture.
Vary your textures. Crackle Paste and Modeling Paste create different surfaces, making the two stencil patterns more interesting together.
Let the background do some of the work. The raised bricks, bats and contrasting colors already provide plenty of detail, so the focal point doesn’t need much else.
Two stencils, a rather suspicious pair of children and plenty of texture. Halloween is coming along nicely!
